Provide First Aid Response in an Education & Care Setting

The HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid Response in an Education & Care Setting unit is designed for educators, childcare workers, individuals working with children and infants, support staff, and carers working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to first aid emergencies, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies. This comprehensive course equips participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide a first aid response, life support, and management of a casualty until medical assistance arrives. It covers a wide range of scenarios and medical emergencies that can occur in an educational environment. This course aligns with the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) regulations. It covers first aid qualifications, anaphylaxis management, and emergency asthma management.

• ✓Performing CPR on infants, children, and adults; safely and effectively use an AED; managing a casualty who is unconscious but breathing
• ✓Manage casualties who are unconscious but breathing; place an unconscious casualty in the recovery position
• ✓Recognize and respond to asthma attacks; manage severe allergic reactions including the use of EpiPens for anaphylaxis; respond to diabetic emergencies; provide first aid for epilepsy and seizures; poisoning
• ✓Assess and provide first aid for fractures, sprains, and strains; manage head, neck, and spinal injuries; provide first aid for burns, scalds, and wounds; control bleeding using appropriate techniques
• ✓Recognize and provide first aid for bites and stings; manage heat-related illnesses (heat stroke, heat exhaustion); manage cold-related illnesses (hypothermia); bites and stings; heat and cold-related illnesses
• ✓Manage febrile convulsions in children; respond to common infections and illnesses in children; administer medications correctly in an emergency situation
• ✓Apply bandages and dressings correctly; use asthma inhalers and spacers effectively; participate in simulated first aid scenarios to enhance practical skills
• ✓Communicate effectively with children, parents, and emergency services; accurately document incidents and the treatment provided; provide clear, concise information to healthcare professionals
• ✓Provide emotional support to children and adults during an emergency; recognize signs of stress and trauma; offer reassurance and comfort to casualties and bystanders
• ✓Understand and adhere to legal and ethical considerations in providing first aid; recognize the importance of maintaining confidentiality and gaining consent

Blended learning with a combination of Online modules (Online Pre-study Learning) and Face-to-face practical sessions.

• Online modules (Online Pre-study Learning): Student should allow themselves for about 6 to 8 hours depending on their capability for completing online modules i.e. by reading and answering questions.
• Face-to-face: practical sessions — A 6-hour Face-to-face practical session is conducted in a classroom environment.

• ✓Online pre-study (Quiz) — Knowledge Assessment: Demonstrate understanding of CPR principles through online quizzes. You will complete online pre-study by going through Videos, Photos and answering questions.
• ✓Face-to-Face — Practical Skills Assessment: Be evaluated on your ability to perform CPR techniques on adult, child, and infant manikins and first aid skills.
• ✓Face-to-Face — Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Operation Assessment: Showcase your competency in operating an AED under simulated conditions.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting. Statement of Attainment will include the following unit of competency: HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support, HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting. Safe Work Australia recommends renewing HLATID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification every 12 months to maintain the currency of the skills and knowledge.
